LI Sop****re Killed in Hunting Accident
Vermont - May 1, 2009

Students say father and son were the best of friends. Kevin Kadamus had coached his son Jake's baseball team.

"They were extremely close, extremely close," said Bobby Hubbard, a friend of the family.

Both also loved the outdoors and both loved to hunt.

"That's all he talked about. He absolutely loved hunting, that's all I can say," said Hubbard.

But a hunting trip in Wheelock this morning turned deadly. Police say Kevin Kadamus accidently shot and killed his son Jake with a shotgun, mistaking him for a turkey. The two had split up to hunt different areas, and the father didn't realize his son had returned to the area and was crouching in the brush.

"Obviously a tragedy, a tragedy for the family, for the community. He's a well thought of student. The family's well thought of," said Vermont State Police Captain Ed Ledo.

The father, a game warden, and a fire chief all tried to perform CPR on the teen, but it was too late. Friends and classmates got the news during a school assembly this morning.

"I didn't want to be there because everybody was just crying. I just wanted to leave. I didn't want to admit to myself that it had happened. Everyone loved him. It's just a tragedy it happened," said Hubbard.

Jake Kadamus was a very popular kid at Lyndon Institute. As soon as the school heard the news, classes were cancelled and grief counselors were brought in to speak to his classmates. State police say there have been at least three shooting related incidents in the Northeast Kingdom this year, although there have been only a handful of hunting related deaths in Vermont in the past few years.

"It happens every year, every season, whether it's deer season, turkey season," said Ledo.

No charges have been filed. That will ultimately be left to the Caledonia County State's Attorney office to decide.

NH man injured in turkey hunting mishap
Associated Press - May 4, 2009 5:55 PM ET

SULLIVAN, N.H. (AP) - A Sullivan, N.H., man is recovering after his brother shot him in a hunting accident.

The state fish and game department says 27-year-old Josh Lazzaro and his 29-year-old brother, Scott Lazzaro, were both shooting at the same turkey Monday morning without realizing they were in each others' line of fire.

Josh Lazzaro was hit with several bird shot pellets in the upper body. His injuries were not life-threatening, but officials say the incident illustrates the need to be sure of not only your target, but what's beyond it.

Hunting accident sends one to hospital

By Teresa Moore | The Tribune
Wednesday, May 6, 2009

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — It started out as a recreational event and ended up a medical emergency.

A South Webster man is in serious condition today after being shot while turkey hunting Tuesday morning in an area off Telegraph Hill in Washington Township.

Chris Rollins, 33, was taken from the scene by helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Rollins and his cousin, Joshua Blevins, 22, of Piketon, were seated near each other when a turkey crossed the field in front of them.

Blevins told authorities he fired at the turkey and thought he had hit it, the turkey took off and both men gave chase.

Blevins told authorities that while he was running, the gun discharged. Rollins was struck once in the right lower back with a .12-gauge shotgun.

“All preliminary indications are this was an accidental shooting,” Lawless said. “But it is under investigation and Mr. Blevins is speaking with our detectives as well

O:

It's the stupidity, not the camo.

There is NO EXCUSE AND NO REASON for shooting someone by mistaking that person for a damned turkey!  It's just unbelievably negligent and ridiculous!!!

Can you tell -- although tragic in every sense -- hearing about these "mistakes" perturbs the living you-know-what out of me!

How do these people pass Hunter's Safety Courses????

Okay... My blood pressure is rising to unhealthy levels AGAIN!

Take care and Good Hunting!

I agree with Steve there is no excuse. I was taught to make sure there was no one behind what you are shooting at. Camo is no excuse for shooting someone. Maybe we were just raised different.

You're right on Steve. There's no excuse for this nonsense happening. What a tragedy.

Exactly!  The first thing you have to do is identify the bird to see if it is even a gobbler, so how in the hell do you shoot a person?  Absolutely unbelievable and I think any time this happens that the person should be prosecuted and also lose their hunting license for life!!!

Jeezely, guys ... I wuz merely attemptin' to dilute the tragedy a little with a facetious reference to ... whutever ...

(I know y'all din't take me seriously ... at least I hope y'all din't ... )

Besides which, I received all the various "stuff" (My Bride calls it "more junk to clutter up the house") that sez I'm a Certified HSI now, on Saturday ... and a form to order my "Instructor" shirt ... so ... the HSC idea is more than foremost in my mind ...

Next class around, I'll prolly try to copy and save these sorta "news" items, merely as handouts for the students ... shouldn't hurt, might help ...

Yeah, I agree entirely with the "Stoopidness" assessment ... I recall once hearin' from a neighbor who went to a state east of us here in Nodak, for a deer hunt ... I think it wuz an "in-law" type of deal ...

He said that they'd met some other "hunters" @ the end of the day, and they asked 'em if they'd had any luck ...

One replied, "No ... all I got today was a couple of 'sound' shots ... "

Now, that's STOOPID! ... AND SCARY! (which is one reason I'll never hunt in that state ... I might shoot Paul Bunyan by mistake!)

I agree totally, this kind of stuff is rediculous. If I were to ever hear that one of my Hunter Ed students did something like this, I would probably hunt them down and knock some sense into them myself. What happened to properly identify your target and beyond before shooting at any thing. Camo is no excuse for anyone getting shot. The entire fault lies with the person behind the gun. This boy's dad will have to live with this the rest of his life, and for what reason? His own ignorance. How close do you have to be with a shotgun, and you can't tell the difference between a damn 20 pound bird and a person, stay out of the woods.
Sorry guy's this stuff really chaps my hide and I get carried away.

O the Umanity, congrats on your certification. I hope you get as much pleasure from teaching Hunter Ed as I have. Good Luck with your classes.

Here is an update on the last incident of the original post.....

Fort Plain man charged with shooting man while turkey hunting

By DAVID FILKINS, Staff writer
Last updated: 11:04 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2009

MINDEN - A hunter faces felony charges for shooting a friend when he opened fire on a turkey in an isolated section of this Montgomery County town earlier this month, authorities said.

Dale R. Fisher of Fort Plain was arrested by the Montgomery County sheriff's department on Monday following an investigation into the May 3 shooting that left Thomas Fahy, 49, hospitalized.

At about 7 a.m. that day, Fisher shot at the turkey, killing the bird but also hit Fahy who was waiting in a nearby hedgerow, Sheriff Michael Amato said.

"That's part of the rules: know your target and know what's behind your target," Amato said.

Fisher has been charged with second-degree assault, failure to have a back tag displayed, failure to carry a license while hunting, failure to carry a turkey permit while hunting, hunting with a shot size not permitted and hunting without a license.

Fisher has been released from the county jail, but that's not the last of Fisher's legal trouble. Amato said deputies also expect to charge him with marijuana possession after catching him with drug.

He was sent to the Montgomery County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.

Fahy was treated at Bassett Hospital.
