And so it begins - Tuesday, April 14, 2009 3:35 AM ( #1 )
Spent opening day in the New Jersey Turkey woods to no avail. Apparently the flock in the area I was hunting consists of deaf-mute critters. I did however get a visit from one whopper of a Black Bear. He was a real beauty. We looked each other over and he went about his business. Plenty of Turkey sign but no birds to be had. I did here a couple of shots way off in the distance. It was cold, blustery and sunny. Will try again on Wednesday. My brothers both worked different areas with the same result. It was a weather thing I'm sure.

My brother Joe worked a number of birds yesterday. I was tied up at the Doctors. He could not get any of the Toms to commit. The hens where in charge. Joe's back in there today, I'm going in tomorrow.

Turkey hunting in Kansas was great for me.  Opening day 4/8, took a 10 inch beard Rio Grande, 25 lbs,  then on 4/14 took a 11 inch beard Eastern, 22 lbs. The Rio was old, had 1 1/2 inch spurs, while the Eastern was only 1 inch

Am looking forward now to Missouri which opens 4/20

Congrats wolffj!!!  I am waiting for an opportunity to take a bird BESIDES an Eastern.  Had a brief chance at a Osceola but I left that company and went to another and lost my contacts.  Oh well.....Someday!
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!

Well I'll be heading up with the boy on Saturday, so excited i got all of our gear out and ready tonight. Hope all goes well and he gets to bag his first bird. Only ten years old right now, and no better way to lock them in than with a big old bird...

Don, Joe and I all worked different areas yesterday. Neither Joe nor I could raise a gobble but Don came through with a 22 pounder with a 9 1/2 inch beard. Nice bird. Largest checked into the check station so far this season. I'll post a picture later.

Man, this is one tough season. Our weather is all over the map, now it's hot as hell but still nothing gets these birds gobbling.

Friday starts the New York season. We'll all be in there. Neither my brothers nor my nephew could raise any birds this week. It's an odd season.
