Archery Team Misses Prom to Compete at Nationals

Some students at Montevallo High School in Montevallo, Ala. will be skipping the prom this year to compete with in the National Archery Tournament in Louisville, Ky. on May 8-9.

After the school’s archery team finished third in the Alabama tournament, it was invited to compete in the national competition.

“Even though I’m missing my prom, the nationals will be a good experience,” said senior Maria Wagner, 17. “Everybody’s talking about the trip.”

The team is excited for the upcoming publicity since its formation was only last November according to Phil Carter, the team’s coach.

The co-ed team consists of 21 players, and many of the members had never picked up a bow and arrow before joining the team.

“This is the first time I’ve been around this stuff,” senior Gannon O’Grady, 18, said to the Shelby County Reporter. “You have to work to get the proper technique down. I’ve enjoyed learning and have become pretty good.”

The team is asking for donations to support the 17 archers planning to attend the Kentucky tournament.

Congrats to the students, skipping their prom to compete in an archery tournament... at least they have their priorities straight!!!

ROOOOOOLLLLLLLLL  TIIIIIIIIDDDDDDEEEEEEE!  I am not sure of the mascot of Montevallo H.S. because that is south of where I am from...so I will just throw a blanket Roll Tide out to the kids competing this weekend!!!

That's awesome in more ways than one!!! Congrats to all the folks from AL. Just shows there is hope for the future of archery.
