That's the number I was given today. I guess after I dropped off my deer at the locker they weighed it. Wow that's a big deer. have any idea what the live weight would have been?

Holy Mackerel Andy, LOL!  The live weight at a minimum would have to have been around 330-340# I would think!!!  What a hog of a deer!

On average, (using a weight estimation chart) a deer's entrails weigh around 57 to 59 pounds in a deer that size, so I would guess around 304 to 306 live weight or "on the hoof" weight.

That's one heck of a nice deer.  I'm just glad I was not the one to drag it out, but I suppose with the shot of instant adrenalin you had after shooting it, the drag didn't seem that bad!  LOL!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Steve

Wouldn't it be 331 to 333 lbs if I use your numbers?

CAR---These two guys obviously need to get their calculators to add, LOL!  Yep, 330+ is what I said and with the numbers Steve gave that would add up to the low 330s!!! Incidentally, I really think you should have that rack scored again because I would swear he is a lot higher that in the 150s from what I can see in your picture!

My deer is done so I'll pick it up Friday night. I'll see what they have to say and just how much meat I get back.

Ahhhh..... YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss!  LOL!

For some reason, I was adding 247 instead of 274!  Do NOT ask me why!  It was LATE!!!

So, at 274...  The live weight would be right around 331 to 333!  Ah, heck... What Topgun said!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Hey Steve!  Have you been able to get out much this Fall and, if so, what have you been seeing?  We are getting pounded with lake effect snow since our ML season opened last Friday and it's looking like my hunting is over because I hear there is about 2' where I have permission to hunt over towards the big lake!  We are at 13" here in Allegan since Friday and are to get 4" tomorrow and then they are talking about a big storm with a possible 8" or more over the weekend.  Enough is enough already and it's only 12/8 for Pete's sake!!!

Top, That deep snow is great hunting. Deer are easy to find and they don't want to move long distances. Kind of a **** to walk through though. But I find it to ussually be well worth it.

Mike and Gary:

No...  I have not been out in the woods at all this year.  I have been taking this rehab on my shoulder real slow and real cautious.  This last go'round concerned me quite a bit.  I've never had this severe of lingering pain for such a long time.  I experienced significant pain for over a year!  I had given up on my shoulder healing itself many times over that year, but I kept working on it and my wife helped me stretch it out a couple of times a week and it finally started to improve.

It was crazy!  I would be in sheer agony while lying on the floor when Michelle would slowly stretch out my shoulder joint.  It was like someone was sticking a white-hot poker in my shoulder!  I was almost certain that the only way I was going to alleviate the pain was to have surgery, but after a few months of stretching the shoulder started to show improvement, which was extremely glorifying and encouraging!

I have pulled my bow back once since the pain decreased in intensity.  I was actually afraid to pull it back.  I was really concerned that I would tear my shoulder to pieces, but fortunately the shoulder joint held out.  I am working with free weights and on the Total Gym regularly, so in a month or two I will try to actually shoot my bow.  With concentrated effort and a serious commitment to a weekly workout program, I should be able to chase turkeys this spring.

It's tough sitting it out, but sometimes in life you are the hammer and sometimes you are the nail.  I guess it was my turn to be the nail!

I do NOT miss the Lake Effect Snow that we used to get in Wisconsin, so I do feel your pain, Mike!

Good luck to you guys for the rest of the season.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Re:274 field dressed - Thursday, December 09, 2010 11:28 AM ( #14 )
Gary---I was out west for seven full weeks, then home for less than a week before two more weeks at my place up north, so I was about hunted out anyway.  I'm sure I'll venture out one or two times, maybe tomorrow before this next big storm is due in on Saturday and see how deep the white stuff is over at the one place I have to hunt with the ML west of here.  The friggin thing is still loaded from that New Mexico mulie hunt I was on a good 5 weeks ago and I'd like to touch her off at a deer, rather than shoot a tree or pull the load.  It's an old percussion cap and I replaced the nipple a long time ago with an "Accra Shot" threaded dohicky that takes a small caliber rifle primer.  I have left it loaded and out in the cold for a good 6-8 weeks several times and have never not had it go off.  As long as it don't get wet or change temperatures to form condensate and possibly mess the 777 up I only wipe the outer metal off with an oil rag after each use.  Since it doesn't have a breech plug like the inlines it is a hassle to clean the barrel out.

Steve---Are you sure that the procedure that you mentioned lying on the floor with your wife was to stretch your shoulder muscle, LOL!!!

Re:274 field dressed - Thursday, December 09, 2010 8:39 PM ( #15 )
I was kind of thinking the same thing about that stretching excersize myself.  LOL!!!!!!!!!

My CVA sidelock has been good to me also. I have left it loaded for 2 weeks before and no issues with it firing. I took and replaced my old nipple with a newer percussion one for more fire through the fire passage. The no breach plug guns sometimes have a mind of their own and can be a bit finiky. Good luck in finding one in the white fluffy stuff Mike.

Trust me, guys...  I would have much rather been stretching other parts of my anatomy than my injured shoulder!  I guess you could say that the moans and groans and curse words I was uttering may have sounded like something else, but no such luck!  LOL!

Thank goodness, Michelle had the patience to sit there night after night and help me out.  It was no fun whatsoever, for either of us!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve
