2011 Nodak Muley (any deer) bow tags - Monday, January 10, 2011 5:42 PM ( #1 )
OK ... only gonna mention this ONE time ... so as to not be a nagger ...

The deal is, even a NR can hunt "any" deer in Nodak, and any WHERE ... NO UNITS ASSIGNED ... except ... if a NR wants to shoot a Muley Buck in the "specific/restricted" area (most of the prime Muley locations), he/she hasta have one of these "any" deer tags to take a Muley buck in that designated area. He/she can take ANY deer in that limited portion of the state. Without this license, any deer EXCEPT a Muley buck. All the rest of the state (and there ARE Muleys outside the "zone") is ANY DEER ...

Whut's likely? Well, our local Big Buck contest last Saturday saw a 215 5/8 take the top Muley prize ($750? I fergit) ... the rest of the top seven were: 200 1/8, 197+, 195+, 193+, 191+ and 189 2/8 came in seventh, WHICH WON THE HUNTER A RIFLE! (Seventh in each division wins a rifle, others above that score get other prizes ... ) These were ALL seasons combined in one (Mule Deer) category ... I did not go to the banquet (went to Hunter Ed. workshop instead), so I dunno which, if any, were taken by bowhunters ...

There are big bucks here in Nodak, if one but knows where to find 'em ... but don't ask me ... mine are usually forks or small 3x3s ... HAR! JOKE IS ON ME, I guess!!!)

IIRC, the NR deer license (1st one) will cost the NR hunter $215, for all the needed stamps and such. Bonus potential is that after about the third round of lottery draws, NR tags (doe only) go for $50, last time I checked. Since those tags are for "concurrent seasons" ... it is possible to use those tags, WITH UNIT AND SPECIES/SEX SPECIFIED, in ANY legal season, bow, rifle, or muzzleloader.

I am NOT a "guide" by any means, but if any of y'all are interested, I could help point y'all in some potentially promising direction ... which might involve fees for access, or a guide, but  that's up to y'all ...

LOTS of public land for access, especially if one wants to work the steep & deep of the Badlands, which -- oddly enuf -- is where the bigger Muleys are often found ... also the National Grasslands is all public, and there's a fair amount of State-owned land in that general area as well ... all open to walking access (only, in most cases) ... and some ranchers are amenable to allowing folks in, tho sumtimes for a fee ... but they know where to put you, so that's a plus ... some outfitters (prolly not listed on this site, but at least one or two are) available ... Public land in the heart of the Badlands runs from about 40 miles south of I-94 to roughly that same distance north of it ... mebbe 20-40 miles wide, and a loose guess would be that about half of ALL the land in that general description is Public ...

Bow season opens around Sept. ... 2nd? ... and runs thru the first weekend of January ... continuously ... ALTHO, if an archer is huntin' during the rifle or mzl season, the archer must wear orange (and NOT "camo-orange") ... 400 square inches above the waist, hat & vest-type stuff ...

HERE IS THE OFFICIAL NEWS RELEASE FROM ND G&F:
Nonresident Any-Deer Bow Licenses The North Dakota Game and Fish Department will have 1,091 any-deer bow licenses available to nonresidents in 2011.
The number of nonresident any-deer bow licenses available is 15 percent of the previous year’s mule deer gun license allocation. The Game and Fish Department issued 7,275 mule deer licenses in the 2010 deer gun lottery.
The department will begin issuing any-deer bow licenses March 1. All applications received on or before March 1, 2011, will be treated equally. If more applications are received than there are licenses, each application will be assigned a number. Numbers will be drawn to issue the licenses. Applicants who request to apply together as a party will receive one number. Additional numbers will be drawn to establish a waiting list. If returned licenses become available, these applicants will be offered the licenses. A separate check is required for each application.
If licenses remain after March 1, these will be issued daily on a first-come, first-served basis.

Oh!

That "March 1st" dealie is the START of the "draw" ... tho in the last few years, there have ALWAYS been some licenses left, and they don't sell out until mebbe April or even a bit later ... but this year could be different, with the decline of available tags, due to the lower Muley tags issued in the prior rifle season ...
