1st success in 2010 (Nodak) - Sunday, September 19, 2010 9:01 PM ( #1 )
Well, the youth season opened on Friday ... I wuz busy werkin' on the scooter to do more sprayin' of weeds on the CRP ... Daughter #1 took her two boys out ...

Keep in mind that the Youth season is NOBUDDY but the 12-13-14-15 year olds ...

But ...

D#1 got this one ... (tho Grandson #1 is tryin' to claim it for his own ... )

(Now to see if I can put the foto here ...

Um ... nope ... gotta go put it on FotoPail ...

I'll have it up soon, in the comment sections, below ...

Besides that, they kiked out two bucks frum the CRP on Saturday ... D#1 sat in the car (VERY wet, muddy trails) and the boys walked out to the cattail slough ... "There's a BUCK! (a fork or spike) ... THERE'S A BIG ONE!!! ... "

She said it wuz a regular war zone until they ran outta bullets ... one said "I think I might've hit him ... " but she wuz watchin' and said he wuz still runnin' along quite fine ... NICE 5x5 that several neighbors have been tellin' us about ... so ... we'll see how the season goes ...

And if he makes it to the regular rifle season, there will be ... um ... about six rifles blastin' away to bring him down ... unless they let me shoot first, of course ... then it'll be all over but the guttin' him out ...

OK ... so, y'all might recall a few items of info I mentioned about grandkids huntin' and such ... this is the second (and last) weekend of the Youth Season in Nodak ... got four grandkids huntin' deer this fall ... oldest is Langley, she of the heart surgery, but she's 16 and will hunt ONLY the "regular/rifle" season ... then Daughter #1's two boys, 14 and 15, who can hunt this weekend (again) and ALSO during the rifle season ... then there's Granddaughter #2, who is 13 (plus two months and three weeks -- keep that Specific Age idea in mind) ... and can hunt ONLY the Youth Season ...

Today, about 10 a.m., she finally shot a centerfire rifle for the first time ever ... did FINE! Short range (33 yards), but she put three into a group inside two inches, on a traditional target ... then NAILED the heart on a 1/3-life-size deer target (visual image of same is as tho the critter wuz 100 yards away) ... then REALLY NAILED the 1" square in the center of the heart on a life-size deer target ...

BTW ... she's about 5'0" and 90# ... and she's one of them synchronized dancers sum schools have as part of their athletic programs ... NEVER thot she'd be interested in huntin' ... but she IS!

As part of an effort to assist her, I'd cut 2.5" off the stock on the Savage 340C (.222 cal. which is how ALL the kids started out, plus MB(RH?) and all the grandkids ... ) ... that's the one of which I posted a pix last week, that shot a 3/4" group @ 110 yards ... so, the rifle wuz ready, if the hunter wuz ...

So ... the target practice and orientation and suggestions on whut might happen wuz finished, and as we drove to the neighbors' farm, saw a 'yote, which I shot ... and I asked her if she heard that "pop" when the bullet hit him ... yep ... so, she gnu whut to kinda expect, if/when she ever got a shot ...

Cut to later in the day ... I'm leavin' to come back home with the trailer, and friend of Daughter#3 wuz takin' 'em out to their various platform areas ... more like two-room bungalows on stilts, but PRIME deer area ...

So ... she calls me and sez she got her deer ... ONE SHOT (obviously them Hornady 50-grain V-Max can do the job) ... yeah, she's perty excited ...

AND ... she is the FIRST of the grandkids to ever get a deer ... and her young age beat my own "1ST DEER" age by a year and seven months!

Here's one (crappy) foto, if I can get it to post ...

I think we may have gained a hunter in the crowd ... (not that the others are quitting, but she's the FIRST among all the cousins, so I think she'll be doin' more of this ... next year, she can shoot a buck, and even get more than one tag ... )

It just don't get any better than that. Congratulations to the young lady. I'm hopin my 9 year old grandson gets to shoot one during our youth season. He really wants to bow hunt with us but no way that genisis he shoots will do the job, hate to keep tellin him he needs to wait a bit longer but that's just the way it is.
