Unfortunatley I can't be disappointed this year. I have to move down south. Sure wish I could be there and crack open the paper to find out I didn't get drawn for the 4th year in a row.

Well best of luck to ya. There is hope out there. I had a friend put in last year for the first time ever, got it and got a nice bull too. Hope it works out as good for you as it did for him.

I didn't bother this year. I probably would have gotten a tag after all these years because I booked a Newfoundland Moose hunt for this season.
The freshest tracks still have feet in them.

The Moose (and Elk, and Bighorn) tags (OIL) here in Nodak are Resident Only (unless one wins the raffle, or spends $40K for the sheep tag) ... and we don't get Preference Points for all the misses, and we can't buy points ...

My wife had a moose tag last year (foto is elsewhere around here on the forum) ...

I got my moose tag notification today ...

Yeah ... I'm smilin' ... a LOT ...

RE: 09 moose - Friday, May 01, 2009 3:45 PM ( #13 )
Well, it'll be a "her" ... the secret to gettin' lucky on the draw is to be satisfied with a Cow tag as FIRST choice ... cuts the odds against WAY down ... and I decided I wuz more interested in the hunt itself, and the meat of course, than I wuz in havin' more antlers in the garage and no place to hang 'em ... I'm happy with my choice ... but I'll challenge myself with a handgun or muzzleloader (or bow, if I get enough practice time in ... ) ... and I know I'll have fun ... BEST part is the anticipation, AND the fact that I'll have three (or four ... or five ... ) grandkids to help the hunt, pushin' brush and stuff ...

However ... yeah, fotos and story when it happens ... (I already called the meat processor, to thank him for the MAJOR help after hours on a Saturday nite, last fall ... and to tell him we'll need his services again in October ... )

RE: 09 moose - Saturday, May 02, 2009 12:55 AM ( #16 )
Theoretically (and actually, for the most part), in the NE 1/3 or so ... but there have been sightings as far south and west as where we live, which would encompass as much as everything north or east of the Missouri ... also an occasional sighting in West River country, but that's quite rare ...

The actual units are in that area I described ... my unit (8) is along the northern tier, starting about 50 miles west of the Red River, and south to ND Hwy 17 (about 40 miles S. of Canada), and westward to a point that ends the unit a bit east of the Turtle Mountains ... It's a fairly large unit, and that's where our farmland (in CRP for now) is located ... and where there's a decent population of Moose ... I'll be hunting within 20 miles of Canada mostly, and possibly as close as a mile or two from 49º North Latitude ...

If y'all want a more detailed idea, the actual unit boundaries (if y'all have a ND road map handy) are: ND #1 on the east, ND #17 on the south, and westward to ND #3, then north to Canada. I'm goin' by memory here, but that's perty close.

Daughter #1 got her moose in '92 within a mile of the farm where I grew up, and My Bride got hers about 3/4 mile from my Aunt and Uncle's farm where I spent many Christmas or Thanksgiving dinners ...

I'm hopeful to find one on our own land, that'd be very nice a memory ... but I remember last year and '92, and I know we might not catch the right day in their movement cycle ...

I called a bunch of folks, including those neighbors who have known me literally ALL my life, who scouted D#1's in '92 ... they had a pair in the yard most of the summer in '08, but they wandered off before the season ... he told me that he had seen a moose lying on a snowbank a couple of days ago, near their house ... and another neighbor had "moose poop" reports and a sighting of one eating branches within 100 yards of their house for me today, as well ...

Yeah, I got the notice about 0905 today, and had scouting reports before 1030 ... and I've only called about half the folks who helped us last fall ...

I'm perty confident that we'll have one narrowed down to a close location within the 24-hour period before the opener ... then it'll be up to me ...

My Bride said today that she's wonderin' about my choice to try the muzzleloader, but I suggested that the newer bullet selection extends the viable range to a fair distance ... but I definitely WILL have the .300 Win Mag nearby in reserve, should the handgun/MZL intentions not work out ... (unless I've got a REALLY solid location assured by 12 hours or less -- sundown the day before, basically -- I don't know if I'll have the confidence to try the bow and arrow technique ... we shall see ... I'll have at least two serious rifles, prolly two MZLs and two handguns on the trip ... plus two bows ... and three to five grandkids plus one to three of their parents, to push the brush ...

Our Bronco has (to date) hauled two moose to the butcher shop (Yeah, I called him today as well ... he's excited to see me in October!) and I'll hafta make sure it's ready to do it again ... Only real change MIGHT be that I'll have the snowmobile trailer remodeled a bit by then, but it's as ready to do the job as it was in '92 and '08 ...

BTW, y'all here are gonna save the sanity of My Bride ... she's already mentioned that she hopes I won't drive her as crazy as last year, with all my talk of moose huntin' and such ... so ... if y'all can tolerate my ramblin' and detailed narration, I'll drop those thots here, instead of overloading her with all that talk ...

Yeah ... I'm still excited ...

Another BTW ... we have a (non-refundable) $3 application fee for the Big Three licenses, and if we get one, then we send in the actual license payment ... that's $20 ...

OK ... enuf of this boring stuff for now ... tnx for lettin' me be here, gang ...

RE: 09 moose - Saturday, May 02, 2009 8:09 AM ( #17 )
Well by now I've cooled off.  When my father called me and said that lightning struck twice at their household I was a bit peeved(not really).  I just hope that my mother and father go buy some powerball tickets today so I can retire early.  That's the least they could do for taking my moose tags the past two years.

In all seriousness I am extremely happy that OTH(my Dad) got a ND moose tag and I'm very excited to help on the hunt.

Congrats Dad and good luck.  (If you need some shooting lessons I can help you)

Congrats OTH, I envy you. If you can use a handgun, been a bigtime handgun hunter for 35 years, & love it.

RE: 09 moose - Saturday, May 02, 2009 11:27 AM ( #19 )
Well, Son #1 can relax (for a few hours), I did, in fact, buy a round of lottery tix this a.m. ...

I know well of your "envy" reasguns ... I've envied a number of neighbors and kinfolk over the years for their success with the Big Three tags in Nodak ... a polite type, of course ... I'd never wish 'em bad luck ... merely would wish for some success on a personal basis ...

Now that this one has arrived, I have only one for the Grand Slam (Nodak version, all of the Big Three tags -- I know of a couple of guys who have hit it, and a rather surprising number of folks who have had two of the three) ... and I'd be overjoyed to be another to hit the third one ... BIL got his sheep tag the first year he applied, but hasn't hit the others yet ... the sheep tag is the tuffy, of course ... our herd is quite small, but healthy and viable ... we usually see four or five tags per year given out, plus the one for sale @ the auction ... and there's always about 12,000 or more applications for 'em, so that's fairly long odds ... OTOH, by goin' for a Cow as first choice on Moose or Elk, the odds lower to as good as a mere 10:1, approximately ...

I played those odds becuz I'd rather have the hunt (under my own terms ... MZL, handgun or bow) than wishin' to draw a Bull tag for the next 20 years ... and I'm gonna get SERIOUS about the handgun/MZL practice, since I figger those are my best opportunities to go "non-traditional" and simply take a poke with a large-bore "moose" rifle ...

HEY! Had ANOTHER thot on the "self-challenge" aspect ... I might see about also gettin' some serious practice with the old 1873 Springfield ... really bad sight picture (especially with my OLD eyes!) ... but that'd be more than cool to knock one down with a 517-grain slug ...

So many firearms ... so little time ... and only one tag!

Hmmmmmmmmm ... gonna hafta quit thinkin' so much and get out to the range for more practice (tho it's WAY too windy today, and the "Honey Do" list awaits ... ) ...

RE: 09 moose - Saturday, May 02, 2009 11:40 AM ( #20 )
Oh yeah ... I realized last nite that I'd fergot sumthin' in that list of ordnance I mentioned about five or six posts above here ...

I'm gonna also hafta take at least one (and prolly one more for backup) shotgun along ... merely in case I get lucky early with the moose and the ducks and geese have arrived in sufficient numbers to give a chance at baggin' a few of those as well ... or p'haps we'll see a few grouse ... and at least one or two shotguns for the grandkids, in case all this happens, so they can hunt birds with grandpa ...

But I'll be workin' diligently to fill the tag the first weekend (another advantage of huntin' for "No-Horns" ... y'all don't hafta wonder if you should "wait for a bigger rack") ... gotta try to be done so the following weekend is available so we can hunt the Pheasant opener with the rest of the bunch ...

In case I din't mention it prior, this moose hunt has entirely shot down our trip to Ireland for this fall ...

Between weddings, huntin' and werk and Life Its Ownself ... I'm gonna be perty busy when September rolls around ...

Heckuva deal, eh?
