09 Hunting season plans - Saturday, April 18, 2009 9:12 AM ( #1 )
Well, it should be a fun year for us this year.

1st off, ML season with my wife and boys. We put in as a group for two doe tags and two buck tags, hope to draw.
This is the same location we hunted last year, saw a ton of deer with a few decent bucks there as well.
Wish us luck on that.

2nd up is the guided elk hunt for 3rd season.
My Dad and Brother-in-law are coming out for a hunt this year.
My brother in law is a first year hunter and my dad is getting up in years and may not have it in him much longer.
We decided on a guided elk hunt with Jim Bryce Outfitters up in Delta, Colorado.
I've been emailing back and forth with these guys and I can tell you one thing... I am really looking forward to hunting with them.
They've been really patient with my questions, prompt with their answers. And they like a good laugh.
My dad and bro put in for deer tags as well with Jim not charging extra for them to hunt deer as we go.
I've decided to drop a bear tag in the pot and see if I can spot something while we are up and out there.

With any luck, I will need to buy a new freezer to help hold the meat this year.

Good luck to all
Mike

Sounds great Mike. Let us all know how it turned out for you and the family. Also, be sure to get some pictures of any harvest that you may make on this adventure.

Cheers,

Martin

That's a perty ambitious schedule, Mike ... best of luck with it ...

Speakin' of ambition, I saw a cartoon the other day that talked about it ... the punchline included the quote from Oscar Wilde:

Ambition is the last refuge of Failure.

After that, I thot about it ... I must be a success in life, becuz I'm not very ambitous ... don't wanna move up on the job to a "higher" position (truck/tractor driver is good enuf for me) and I certainly don't want to have more kids!

However ... I'd disagree with that thought as far as huntin' goes ...

I'm VERY ambitious ... my goal is always to do a better job of huntin' than I did the last time I went out afield ... not necessarily get a "bigger" critter, or "more" birds ... but simply to be a better hunter ... (well, mebbe to not miss as many times ... but that's another story!)

Ya know OTU.... I'm not sure I would say I am overly ambitious, but I would say I am driven.
I don't try to climb the corporate ladder, but I love a good challenge. Usually I can drive myself toward that challenge and succeed. Failure is just a learning experience in order to do better next time around.

I would say I use this same outlook in most things I do... hunting included. I've been enjoying my seasons more and more because I have my boys to share it with. Before they got old enough to hunt, I think it was getting a little boring for me. I noticed myself not trying as hard, spending more and more time in camp or just walking around in a smaller area and not paying much attention.
Maybe I needed them to give me that drive I used to have once more. For that, I am thankful. The seasons look brighter again and I look forward to them even more so than I used to do.

Maybe I am just getting older too... LOL

I know whereof y'all speak, Mike ... on the "ambition" dealie, I've already had most of a lifetime of aspiring to excel and move "up the ladder" ... don't need it much any more ... merely try to do the best job of which I'm capable, especially considerin' my age ... I'm a little slower than I wuz 30 years ago ... HAR!

On the "age" thing its ownself ... I also recognize yer allegation on the ... whut? ... energy put into the hunt?

For a long time, it wuz merely me gettin' out there (with Pa, usually, but with other folks as well at times), and doin' the huntin' part more or less on my own (within whutever group I wuz with), but once my kids got to huntin' age, I wuz able to bring them along to some degree of success, and they all still have an interest today ... they're not as involved as I am, perhaps, becuz they've got lots of other Real Life stuff to manage ... but they all like it, when they can fit it into their schedules ...

HOWever ... now I'm gettin' ready to bring the third one of my grandkids into the sport, with the deer season this fall ... and I learnt only today that my other granddaughter is REALLY interested in goin' huntin' ... never expected it of her ... she's into team dance competition, and I sorta thot that wuz her direction, but her mom told me today that she's excited to get started ... she's 11, and will take the HSC @ her next opportunity, so that'll be #4, and #5 will be followin' right behind ... with her younger brother @ #6 and Son #1's older boy @ #7 ... I may even get to have more than one in a given calendar year (tho I'd hafta check birthdays to be sure of that) ... and #8 will be followin' along about four years after his brother ...

Each of these NEW hunters will be an adventure for me ... I may only hope that I'll last long enuf with my strength, energy and ability to move in the field on my own, to help each one of 'em get started in their Nimrodical adventures ...

I'll be tryin' to make it as much fun for them and the amount of fun I'll be havin' takin' 'em out there afield ...

Making plans for deer and elk. Checking sat photos and topo maps to check out a new area. The only problem is I have to wait until early June to see if I got any tags. Figure I will get deer tag but elk hunting is the one I question and really hope to get.
